Regenerative Medicine and Tissue Engineering

Regenerative medicine (RM) and tissue engineering (TE) is an area of science which offers therapeutic strategies to replace or regenerate human cells, tissues, or organs to fully functional structures. TE and RM have many capacities in treatment of different diseases such as dermal wounds, cardiovascular diseases and traumas, cancer, and more.

Materials are critical component of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine since they mimic the native biological environment of cells or tissues and direct response. They also contribute to the structure and function of new tissue. For instance, 3D polymer scaffolds are utilized to encourage augmentation of chondrocytes in cartilage repair and provide a scaffold for fibroblasts in the treatment of venous ulcers (Dermagraft). However, there is essential to develop novel materials with the ability to affect biological processes.

Computational biology could assist us in developing regenerative medicine in different ways. For example, we could control many biological pathways by different ligands in a desired way. Meanwhile, peptide as a natural substance which have been extensively used in pharmaceutical industry is a promising component to be used in regenerative medicine. Here, at ADDTEC, with access to world first class knowledge of computational methods and high performance facilities, we aim to apply computational approaches in order to design peptides for application in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.
